Paying down the Sleep Debt: Realization of Benefits during Subsequent Sleep Restriction and Recovery
نویسنده
چکیده
The study objective was to determine whether sleep extension (a) improves alertness and performance during subsequent sleep restriction and (b) mediates the rate at which alertness and performance are restored by postrestriction recovery sleep. Twenty-four healthy adult participants (ages 18-39) were randomly assigned to an Extended [10 hours time in bed (TIB)] or Habitual [mean (SD) = 7.09 (0.7)] sleep group for one week, followed by one Baseline (10 hours or habitual TIB), seven Sleep Restriction (3 hours TIB), and five Recovery Sleep nights (8 hours TIB) with performance [Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT)] and alertness [Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT); Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS)] tests administered hourly throughout. We conclude that the extent to which sleep restriction impairs alertness and performance, and the rate at which these impairments are subsequently reversed by recovery sleep, varies as a function of the amount of nightly sleep obtained prior to the sleep restriction period.

Repeated sleep restriction in rats leads to homeostatic and allostatic responses during recovery sleep.
Recent studies indicate that chronic sleep restriction can have negative consequences for brain function and peripheral physiology and can contribute to the allostatic load throughout the body. Interestingly, few studies have examined how the sleep-wake system itself responds to repeated sleep restriction. In this study, rats were subjected to a sleep-restriction protocol consisting of 20 h of ...

Daytime performance changes were examined during chronic sleep restriction or augmentation and following subsequent recovery sleep. Sixty-six normal volunteers spent either 3 (n = 18), 5 (n= 16), 7 (n = 16), or 9 h (n = 16) daily time in bed (TIB) for 7 days (restriction/augmentation) followed by 3 days with 8 h daily TIB (recovery). In the 3-h group, speed (mean and fastest 10% of responses) o...

Study objectives To investigate the temporal evolution of sleep EEG changes in adolescents across two cycles of sleep restriction and recovery simulating an intense school week and to examine the effect of an afternoon nap on nocturnal sleep. Methods A parallel-group design, quasi-laboratory study was conducted in a student hostel. Fifty-seven adolescents (31 males, age = 15-19 years) were ra...

Sleep plays a vital role in regulating physiological mechanisms in the human body. Nowadays, by the change of lifestyle and as a consequence of longer work hours and increased accessibility to media, sleep disturbance becomes a common problem in modern society. Many studies demonstrated that sleep disturbance triggers a systemic low-grade inflammation by increasing the level of several cytokine...
